HC Deb 23 June 1954 vol 529 cc416-7
18. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the extent of the damage caused by the explosion in Georgetown on 26th May.

Mr. Lyttelton

The statue of Queen Victoria standing in the front of the Law Courts was rather badly damaged and a number of windows were broken.

Mr. Hughes

Was the damage to the statue of Queen Victoria really serious? Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are many local authorities in this country who would gladly send statues of Queen Victoria over there?

Mr. Lyttelton

I do not think that the hon. Member's question is in perhaps the happiest vein. The statue lost the head and an arm.
