HC Deb 17 June 1954 vol 528 cc2269-70
38. Mr. Albu

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether any decision has yet been reached on the responsibility within the Civil Defence Corps for the removal of casualties from a bombed area.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

Agreement has been reached with representative associations of local authorities that the collection of casualties after air attack shall be carried out by a reconstituted Ambulance Section of the Civil Defence Corps with increased duties. Discussions have also taken place with the St. John Ambulance Brigade and the British Red Cross Society.

A regulation under the Civil Defence Act, 1948, conferring on local authorities the function of arranging for casualty collection will be laid before the House today by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health, and, when it has been approved, local authorities will be sent advice.
