HC Deb 15 June 1954 vol 528 c1742
59. Mr. Parker

asked the Minister of Works when it is proposed to resume the excavations at Avebury which were interrupted by the war in 1939.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works (Mr. J. R. Bevins)

The excavations which took place at Avebury before the war were carried out with private funds. This important prehistoric site came under my Department's care during the war. At present all funds available for excavations have to be devoted to emergency work on sites threatened by building or other development. Avebury is not so threatened, and my right hon. Friend regrets there is no prospect of excavations there in the immediate future.
