HC Deb 01 June 1954 vol 528 cc1057-8
10. Mr. Bence

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received respecting school accommodation in Lenzie; and what steps he proposes to take in response to those representations.

Mr. Henderson Stewart

The hon. Member sent my right hon. Friend a letter from the Lenzie Academy Parent-Teacher Association urging that the construction of the new Lenzie Academy should begin this year and similar representations were received from Kirkintilloch Town Council. My right hon. Friend wrote to the hon. Member in April explaining that in view of the time which the education authority requires for the preparation of plans and the taking of tenders it is unlikely that the work will be ready to start before next May. All concerned are fully aware of the need for new accommodation at Lenzie and a working party of representatives of the education authority and the Department has been set up to ensure that this and other school building projects in Dunbartonshire proceed with all possible speed.
