§ 9. Mr. Benceasked the Secretary of State for Scotland when work is to be started on the proposed secondary school to serve Bearsden and Milngavie.
§ The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Henderson Stewart)Work is expected to start early in 1955.
§ Mr. BenceIs the hon. Gentleman aware that by the end of 1955 there will be hundreds of children in Bearsden and Milngavie with qualifications for secondary education but there will be no school for them? Could he not get on with this job immediately, otherwise a serious situation will arise?
§ Mr. StewartAs the hon. Member knows, there was a delay in 1953 on account of the site, which eventually had to be acquired compulsorily. That resulted in a large part of the year being lost. We have now appointed a working party composed of representatives of the authority and the Scottish education department, and I assure the hon. Member that we are doing everything feasible to press this matter forward.
