§ 48. Mr. Lewisasked the Prime Minister if he will give details of the rule concerning the relinquishment of all outside financial interests by members of Her Majesty's Government on appointment to their respective offices; and whether he will introduce the necessary legislation to make this procedure universally applicable to all Members of Parliament on taking the Oath of Allegiance.
§ The Prime Minister (Sir Winston Churchill)In answer to the first part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave on Monday, 25th February, 1952, a copy of which I am sending to him. The answer to the second part of the Question is: "No, Sir."
§ Mr. LewisWhilst agreeing that it would be wrong to try to prevent the representatives of the big vested interests who are sitting on the benches opposite with all their company directorships, from being Members of this House, may I ask the Prime Minister whether he will not agree that it is wrong for the 1922 Committee to try to prevent working men and those who work with their hands as well as with their brains from becoming Members of this House?
