§ 49. Mr. Wyattasked the Prime Minister whether he will invite Herr Adenauer to London to discuss with him the problems arising from the fact that the European Defence Community Treaty has not yet been ratified by France.
§ The Prime MinisterI hope that the House will allow me reasonable discretion about invitations of this character. Such matters are always in my mind, and my respect and regard for Dr. Adenauer are well known.
§ Mr. WyattWill the Prime Minister bear in mind that he usually gives me this sort of answer and then has a meeting later on with the persons to whom the Question refers? Would be bear in mind that Herr Adenauer said that while he thinks the E.D.C. Treaty ought to go ahead, in his view it can be modified? Would it not be a good thing for the right hon. Gentleman and Dr. Adenauer to meet and discuss how this Treaty could be modified, instead of trying to bludgeon the French who, after all, are only bearing in mind what he himself once advocated—a European army with Britain it it?
§ The Prime MinisterIf ever I should have the good fortune to meet Dr. Adenauer, the hon. Member will have the pleasure of feeling that he has once again pointed the way to Government policy.
