HC Deb 25 February 1954 vol 524 cc562-3
44. Mr. George Craddock

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cases of robbery with violence have been committed between the years 1947 and 1953 by young men between the ages of 18 and 30.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The number of crimes of robbery with violence known to the police cannot be analysed according to the ages of the offenders, some of whom are not known. The number of men aged 18 and less than 30 convicted in the years 1947 to 1952 of offences of robbery under section 23 (1) of the Larceny Act, 1916, was 1,335. The figure for 1953 is not yet available

Mr. Craddock

Arising from his study of this problem, is the right hon. and learned Gentleman in a position to say whether he has reached any conclusion which might help in reducing the number of such cases?

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

I hope that the action which this House took last year in dealing with violence is having, and will continue to have, a salutary effect. I believe that, every year, the penal provisions which we have introduced are acting with more effect on the problem.
