HC Deb 03 February 1954 vol 523 cc348-9
47. Sir Ian Clark Hutchison

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation the latest estimate which he has received from the British Transport Commission, during the course of his discussions, of the life of the existing Forth railway bridge.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I am advised that, with the present standard of maintenance, the approach and internal viaducts and the floor of the bridge should have a life of another 40 years or more before needing renewal, while the main structure should last at least another 140 years.
