HC Deb 09 December 1954 vol 535 c1097
19. Wing Commander Bullus

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many totalisators upon greyhound racecourses have ceased to operate since the introduction of pool betting duty in 1948; and the total revenue from the duty reported to him by local authorities in 1948 and in 1953.

Major Lloyd-George

The answer to the first part of the Question is 38, and to the second about £9,449,000 and about £6,127,000 respectively.

Brigadier Medlicott

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that this tax is bearing very harshly upon this sport, and is producing a diminishing revenue? Could he confer with the Chancellor of the Exchequer to see whether some easement could be provided in the next Budget?

Major Lloyd-George

As my hon. Friend knows, the last part of his supplementary question is a matter for my right hon. Friend, but I am prepared to consult him on the matter.
