HC Deb 06 December 1954 vol 535 c574
4. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Health the number of prescriptions dispensed under the National Health Service for the nine months ended 30th September, 1954; and how this compares with 1952 and 1953.

Miss Hornsby-Smith

The number in England and Wales was 160,057,142. The numbers for the corresponding periods in 1952 and 1953 were 160,322,768 and 163,553,240, respectively.

Mr. Dodds

Does not the hon. Lady think that something might be done to reduce these astronomical figures if the Government put greater emphasis on fitness by encouraging physical recreation and less on medicine?

Miss Hornsby-Smith

That is another question.
