HC Deb 21 October 1953 vol 518 c1974
54. Mr. G. Wilson

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General how many applications for a telephone are outstanding in Cornwall; and how this figure compares with that of a year ago.

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. David Gammans)

2,689 applications are outstanding compared with 3,372 a year ago.

Mr. Wilson

Is my hon. Friend aware how gratified the people of Cornwall will be at this improvement?

Mr. Hayman

Will the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that there are many applicants for telephones in and around Redruth who have been waiting some years? Will he expedite the necessary expansion of the service to see they get satisfaction soon?

Mr. Gammans

The hon. Gentleman will be pleased to know that the situation in Cornwall is slightly better than the average of the country, and that there are a number of schemes in hand that, I hope, will still further improve the situation in the near future.
