§ Mr. Iain MacleodExpenditure on the maintenance of hospital buildings, plant and grounds (excluding wages of staff) was just over £7.8 million in 1951–52. The estimate for 1952–53 was £10,059,000, but this is probably unrealistic and a final figure is not yet available.

§ Mr. MacleodI think the most important recent step is that we have now abandoned the separate ceiling for building maintenance, which affects both these previous years' figures, and hospitals have been instructed—it will be of great benefit to them—that they can spend as much as they like on building maintenance within their total allocation.
