HC Deb 09 June 1953 vol 516 c6
5. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will appoint a Committee to inquire into the organisation and expenditure of local government in the Principality of Wales and Monmouthshire and to advise him on matters which may require different solutions than those appropriate in other parts of the United Kingdom.

Mr. H. Macmillan

These complicated problems are in the main common to both England and Wales and I do not think that it is necessary to appoint a committee such as is proposed by my hon. Friend.

Mr. Gower

Has my right hon. Friend noted the peculiarly small income from a 1d. rate in many of the Welsh counties? Will he examine that aspect of the problem?

Mr. Macmillan indicated assent.
