§ 50. Mr. Willeyasked the Minister of Food whether he will make a statement on his future policy regarding the purchase and procurement of New Zealand dairy produce.
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeThe present contracts for the purchase of butter, cheese and milk powder from New Zealand do not expire until July, 1955, and no decision has been made regarding the position thereafter.
§ Mr. WilleyWould the right hon. and gallant Gentleman agree that there is a great deal of anxiety in New Zealand about the dairy produce procurement, 29 and that the sooner we make up our minds to extend this agreement the better the prospects of getting more cheese and butter out of New Zealand?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeNew Zealand need have no fear about the future of the dairy industry. In the agreement which comes to an end in 1955 it is laid down that at any period it can be discussed.
§ Mr. WilleyIs the Minister aware that there is a good deal of dissatisfaction at our refusal to enter into a long-term agreement with New Zealand—they are asking for a 15 years' agreement—and would Her Majesty's Government indicate as soon as possible to what length they are prepared to go to extend the present agreement?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeIt was agreed that any further discussion should be deferred until next year.
