§ 36. Mr. Hastingsasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he will make a further statement regarding the case of Elijah Njeru Gideon who died on 29th January as the result of beating and, in particular, why the two Askaris who carried out the beating under orders were not called as witnesses at the inquiry; how many persons, white or black, have been charged in connection with the death of this man; and what charges have been made against them.
§ Mr. LytteltonTwo Europeans, an officer of the Kenya Police Reserve and a warrant officer of the Kenya Regiment, have been charged with manslaughter in this case. The African askaris involved have now given full statements, and it is proposed to call them as Crown witnesses.
