HC Deb 02 February 1953 vol 510 cc1459-60
32. Miss Ward

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what saving in bricks is expected to result from the different designs of the two power stations which he has authorised to be built at Carrington and Wakefield, respectively.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Carrington used 10 million bricks and Wakefield should use between 2½ and 3 million—a saving of 75 per cent.

Miss Ward

In view of the fact that that answer will give great satisfaction to those who believe in economy and efficiency, could my right hon. Friend say anything about the financial saving, too?

Mr. Lloyd

No, I could not. That would be a different matter.

Mr. Gaitskell

Would the right hon. Gentleman tell us what has been used in place of bricks?

Mr. Lloyd

One of the chimneys is being made of concrete instead of bricks.
