HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 cc376-7
40. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the irregularities which occurred in the recent election in the Plaines Williams, Black River constituency of Mauritius; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Lyttelton

I am aware that the result of this election has been the subject of a petition to the Supreme Court of Mauritius, and I am asking the Governor for a report. When it is received, I will write to the hon. Member.

Mr. Johnson

Is the Minister aware that a certain Doctor Rivailland has been unseated in the constituency referred to and that Mr. Chavdien has been put in his place, and in view of the wide feelings that there has been corruption in this election, will he consider appointing a commission to investigate?

Mr. Lyttelton

I think that in his supplementary question the hon. Member was imparting information rather than seeking it. Until I hear the result of the petition to the Supreme Court I shall have to give a negative answer.
