HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 c385
67. Mr. Willey

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what factors have caused the reduced tonnage of ships built for export this year

Mr. J. P. L. Thomas

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Newport (Mr. Peter Freeman) on 20th May, 1953.

Mr. Willey

In view of the recognised importance of improving our position, would the right hon. Gentleman consider meeting the representatives of the industry to see what can be done to increase the volume of our export of ships?

Mr. Thomas

I can inform the hon. Member that I propose to go to this area early in January, when I look forward to having the conversations he has mentioned with the people concerned.

Mr. Rankin

Will the right hon. Gentleman also visit the Clyde area where the position is equally serious?

Mr. Thomas

I visited certain parts of the Clyde area only last week-end, and I hope to be able to make a return visit to the Clyde before very long.
