§ 5. Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made in preparing and carrying out schemes to remove the fundamental causes of social and economic discontent in Kenya.
§ Mr. LytteltonI would refer the hon. and learned Member to the statements which I made on 28th October and 9th December.
§ Mr. HughesWhilst appreciating the grave problems which the right hon. Gentleman has to face, may I ask him whether he does not agree that violence alone will not win a settled peace, but on the contrary will leave a trail of bitterness unless the root causes, economic and social, of these troubles in Kenya are tackled in a constructive way?
§ Mr. LytteltonThe need for economic and social progress is well realised and I have given a great number of figures to show that progress.
