HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 cc367-8
6. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will now take steps to arrange for an all-party delegation of Members of Parliament to visit Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland to inspect and report upon the prospects of gaining African co-operation in the Central African Federation.

Mr. Lyttelton

No, Sir. In the view of Her Majesty's Government what is now needed is a period in which to settle down to the practical task of making Federation work—a task in which the Federal Government fully recognises its need to earn African confidence.

Mr. Hughes

Does not the Minister agree that, in view of the results of the Federal elections yesterday, it is important that there should be the fullest understanding between this House and the Houses out there? Would not the suggestion I have made be a beneficial step in that direction?

Mr. Lyttelton

I think not at this stage. One of the features of the elections has been the great interest shown in them by Africans.
