HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 c366
54. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if the official figures of Africans wounded during the emergency in Kenya include those injured by torture during screening.

Mr. Lyttelton

I cannot accept the implication of this Question. Any kind of ill treatment by screening teams is strictly forbidden. Out of 153,398 persons arrested up to 5th December there have been 24 cases of complaints of assault or beatings by security forces. In eight cases the allegations were not substantiated or there have been acquittals. There have been convictions in five cases, one case is before the court and 10 are still under investigation.
