HC Deb 29 April 1953 vol 514 c2134
22. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies on what charges Dr. Nwafur Abyssinia Orizu, Eastern Regional Secretary of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons and his brother Joseph Orizu have been brought to trial in Nigeria.

Mr. Lyttelton

The brothers Orizu have been charged under the Criminal Code of Nigeria with conspiring to defraud persons who might be induced to deposit money with them as agents for a body known as the American Council on African Education Incorporated, and with stealing from such persons.

Mr. J. Johnson

Can the Minister tell us why this Dr. Orizu has only now been hauled before the courts, because I gather he has been doing this since, I think, 1948? Is not it somewhat disgraceful that it has taken so long to investigate this case of defrauding parents and students?

Mr. Lyttelton

I cannot answer that question without notice. I might hazard that the evidence may have taken some time to collect, but if the hon. Member will put down a Question, I shall be glad to answer it.
