§ 26. Mr. D. Brookasked the Minister of Food if he is aware of the deterioration in the meat content of some makes of sausages since decontrol; and what action he proposes to take.
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeI am not aware of any such deterioration.
§ Mr. BrookIs the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that in the "Grocer" of 7th March it was stated that one firm was making pork sausages with a meat content of 45 per cent. as against the figure of 65 per cent. under control? What action does he intend to take to protect the interests of the consumer in such circumstances?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeI should like to see the consumers take some action themselves occasionally. There are plenty of varieties of sausage today, not only among those made by the big manufacturers, but among those to be found in butchers' shops. If the consumer exercised the choice open to him, I am sure there would be an improvement.
Mr. J. T. PriceIs the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that in the Manchester district there has been an average increase of 4d. a lb. in the price of sausages since they were decontrolled?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeI have got the figures for Halifax before and after control. There has been practically no change at all there.
§ Mr. NabarroWill the Minister resist all blandishments from the benches opposite to reintroduce that milk sausage which was the symbol of Socialist rule for six years?
