HC Deb 23 October 1952 vol 505 cc1267-8
50. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Prime Minister what advice was tendered by Her Majesty's Government in connection with the arrangements for televising the Coronation ceremony.

The Prime Minister

This is not a matter on which Her Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom, or indeed Ministers of the Crown alone advise the Crown, and I do not feel able to make any statement on the subject at present.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Is the Prime Minister aware that it is reported that the advice of the Cabinet was sought; that the ban on television has caused bitter disappointment to a very large number of loyal subjects; and will he, therefore, be so kind as to make representations, either to lift or to modify the ban so that this historic national occasion is not unnecessarily marred by a widespread sense of grievance?

The Prime Minister

There are several Questions on the Order Paper for next week on this subject and I should prefer to reserve anything I have to say until then.
