HC Deb 11 November 1952 vol 507 cc753-4
38. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many local education authorities are now using accommodation other than school buildings for the teaching of children; and how this figure compares with that of a year ago.

Mr. Henderson Stewart

Twenty-eight education authorities were using such accommodation during the year ended 30th June, 1952, as compared with 29 the previous year.

Mr. Hamilton

Can the Minister indicate exactly the nature of this accommodation and say how many school places are being catered for by it? Furthermore, can he indicate what are the prospects for the next year or two?

Mr. Stewart

Most of the hired premises, if not all, are halls used for general recreational purposes. I think the tendency is for the hiring of premises to go down; at any rate, it has been falling during the past 12 months.
