HC Deb 10 November 1952 vol 507 cc591-2
51. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Minister of Food what action his Regulations prescribe that a customer should take when a butcher delivers to her home meat in excess of the legal ration.

Dr. Hill

It is contrary to the rationing Orders either to supply or to obtain more than the proper quantities of rationed foods.

Mr. Wells

Is not the hon. Gentleman aware that this practice is widespread, that an increasing number of families in the lower income groups are unable to take up the whole of their rations, and that butchers are therefore left with a surplus, particularly of the higher priced cuts, which they pass on to their better-off customers? Is this a policy of less red meat for the poor and more for the rich?

Dr. Hill

Where alleged breaches of the rationing Orders are reported to the food office proper inquiry is made, and the appropriate steps taken.
