HC Deb 20 May 1952 vol 501 cc260-1
40. Mr. Russell

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will stop the importation into this country of stilletos marked, "Made in Italy."

Mr. H. Strauss

No, Sir. Italian stilettos may be imported under quotas which cover imports from a number of countries of a variety of articles. These quotas represent a severe reduction on previous imports.

Mr. Russell

Does not my hon. and learned Friend agree that it is undesirable to spend valuable foreign exchange on weapons of this kind when there have been cuts in the import of food and other useful commodities from foreign countries?

Mr. Strauss

I do not think that it is desirable to use import restrictions to exercise a sort of censorship on goods according to one's likes or dislikes. If my hon. Friend has in mind any question of the sale of these goods having regard to conditions of public safety, perhaps he will put down a Question to my right hon. and learned Friend the Home Secretary.

Mr. Fernyhough

Are these to help in the equipment of our Forces?

Mr. Strauss

No, Sir.
