HC Deb 14 May 1952 vol 500 cc1426-7
37. Mr. Hurd

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will arrange for a record to be prepared and published of the agricultural and scientific lessons derived from the large-scale land clearing and cropping operations undertaken by the Overseas Food Corporation in Tanganyika and the Colonial Development Corporation in the Gambia, so that reliable information may be available when similar projects come to be considered in the future.

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Oliver Lyttelton)

The Overseas Food Corporation has already published information about its operations in Tanganyika in its annual reports, particularly in Chapters 2 and 3 of the Report for 1948–49. They have the matter raised by my hon. Friend's Question very much in mind and their future reports will contain further information and relevant statistics which should be of value. I do not think that there are any general lessons to be learned from the Gambia Scheme, other than the importance of adequate preliminary investigations.
