§ 42. Mr. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give details of the Government's wages policy; and what discussions have taken place with the Trades Union Congress concerning details of this policy.
§ Sir A. SalterMy right hon. Friend is in frequent consultation with both sides of industry on this as on other questions, but he does not think it appropriate to make a general statement at this moment.
§ Mr. LewisIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Chancellor of the Exchequer was reported to have made a speech last week in Saffron Walden, his own constituency, to the effect that he would try to introduce a policy of wage restraint? Is he not further aware that because of the rapid rise in the cost of living resulting from the Budget, trade unionists are compelled now to make applications for wage increases?
§ Sir A. SalterI cannot make a wide statement on that very general question now.
