§ 43. Mr. Jannerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will give an estimate of the amount of foreign exchange which will be used by British tourists during the current financial year as a result of recent reductions; and what estimate has been obtained of the amount likely to be spent by foreign tourists in Great Britain during the same period.
§ Sir A. SalterI am reluctant to attempt a definite forecast of our receipts 547 and payments under this head in 1952–53. I may remark, however, that in 1951 it is estimated that the non-sterling expenditure on travel amounted to about £63 million, and receipts to about £43 million. It would seem reasonable to hope that the reduction in tourist allowance announced will prevent a deficit this year.
