HC Deb 25 March 1952 vol 498 c196
31. Mr. Carmichael

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the amount of steel being directed in 1952 to Scottish housing; and if he will give an assurance that the percentage of this country's steel allocation to Scottish housing is sufficient, in view of the labour force engaged on housing and the need for an increase in the housing quota in Scotland.

Commander Galbraith

It has never been the practice to disclose allocations of materials for particular services, but I can assure the hon. Member that the requirements of housing in Scotland have been and will be fully taken into account in making allocations.

Mr. Carmichael

Will the hon. and gallant Gentleman state the actual position of steel in Scotland, recognising, as was submitted to one of his own committees, that the employers of labour and the operatives have indicated that they could do much more with the present labour force if they were getting a proper allocation?

Commander Galbraith

I think the situation is gradually improving.
