HC Deb 25 March 1952 vol 498 cc187-8
34. Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will take steps to ease the burden of high transport costs in the North of Scotland area.

Mr. Henderson Stewart

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave to a Question by the hon. Member for Orkney and Shetland (Mr. Grimond) on 29th January.

Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind that the burden of high transport charges has borne for a very long time on the North of Scotland and that we cannot expect any sort of Highland development until this burden is eased? Can he not take some steps to see that the recommendations of the Cameron Committee are implemented?

Mr. Stewart

We are well aware of the problem. Action is being taken in the case of fish, as the House knows, and we hope to extend our action in other directions in due course.
