HC Deb 17 March 1952 vol 497 cc1905-6
27. Dr. A. D. D. Broughton

asked the Minister of Food when he proposes to introduce legislation to supplement the Food and Drugs Acts for the purpose of establishing a standard of hygiene in catering establishments.

Major Lloyd George

I regret that owing to the pressure of Parliamentary business it is not likely to be possible to introduce legislation during the present Session.

Dr. Broughton

Would it not be much better if the Government were to abandon all their proposed provocative legislation, such as the National Health Service Bill, and provide us with time to discuss this important matter which is likely to be of a non-controversial character and action on which would be of real value to the public?

Major Lloyd George

I can assure the hon. Member that I am most anxious to get this legislation discussed as soon as possible, but of course there is a Statute in existence which is being implemented. This matter is, of course, important and I am most anxious that legislation should be brought forward as soon as possible.

Colonel Alan Gomme-Duncan

Was there not ample opportunity for the last Government to undertake this instead of the provocative legislation they brought forward?

Dr. Broughton

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that there is a growing suspicion that the Government have no policy to reduce the incidence of food poisoning other than their plans for reducing the amount of food available for consumption?
