HC Deb 12 March 1952 vol 497 cc1383-4
53. Sir Ian Fraser

asked the Minister of Food whether he will allow the fat allocation to bakers and confectioners in seaside and other holiday towns where there is a very marked difference between the season and off-season demand, to be carried forward or, alternatively, allow greater amounts in the season.

Dr. Hill

Yes, Sir. Any baker whose trade is markedly seasonal may carry forward part of his off-season allocation of fat if he gives notice in advance that he wishes to do so.

Sir I. Fraser

But as these men could not have known that the Government would cut their fat just when the season was beginning, and as that is the time when they make their money and serve their customers, could the hon. Gentleman allow this spreading over to be retrospective?

Dr. Hill

This arrangement has been in existence since 1941. Although it is not widely known or widely used, my right hon. and gallant Friend sees no reason to change it now.
