HC Deb 30 July 1952 vol 504 cc1477-8
42. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General what additional precautions are now taken by his Department to ensure the safety of valuable mail in course of transit by rail.

Mr. Gammans

It would not be in the public interest to give details of precautions taken to ensure the safety of the mails, and I feel sure the hon. and gallant Member will not press me to do so. I can, however, assure him that the arrangements for safeguarding all mails conveyed by rail are being overhauled in collaboration with the railway authorities and strengthened where necessary.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that his assurance that he has done something to improve the lamentable state of affairs in the Post Office, which has been revealed by recent occurrences, is greatly welcomed and will do something to strengthen the rapidly diminishing confidence in the Postmaster-General and his Assistant?
