HC Deb 01 July 1952 vol 503 c237
41. Mr. M. MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when work on the Isle of North Uist water supply schemes is to begin.

Mr. J. Stuart

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer that I gave to him on this subject on 4th December, 1951, to which I have nothing to add at present.

Mr. MacMillan

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that on this island there are some thousands of people left without suitable or even safe water supply; that during the summer months they suffer from drought and lose some of their cattle; has he no plan at all for a water supply in this area to assist the ordinary domestic needs and convenience of the people and local agriculture; and has he nothing to add to an answer which said nothing at all?

Mr. Stuart

I understand that the county council may be considering a revised scheme which would be rather less costly, but I have not at present received any approach from them on the subject.
