HC Deb 05 February 1952 vol 495 c798
40. Mr. Pryde

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware of the need for new school accommodation in Midlothian, especially in developing mining areas; and what action he proposes to take.

Commander Galbraith

Yes, Sir. The Scottish Education Department are in close touch with the Midlothian Education Authority. Eight schools are under erection or planned.

Mr. Pryde

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that schools which should have been commenced in 1948 are still in the offing, and that there is now a continuous trek of miners from Midlothian back to Lanarkshire because there are no educational facilities for their children?

Commander Galbraith

The hon. Member must not hold this Government responsible for that state of affairs.

Mr. William Ross

I wonder if the hon. and gallant Gentleman would suggest to the Secretary of State the urgent need for a fourth Under-Secretary of State to deal with Questions about education?
