HC Deb 05 February 1952 vol 495 cc797-8
37. Mr. Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total cost of administration in education in the financial years of 1938, 1945 and 1950, respectively; and what was the figure as a percentage of total education expenditure in each case.

Commander Galbraith

The expenditure of education authorities on administration was £418,268 for 1938, £544,737 for 1945, and £946,086 for 1950. This represented 3.04, 3.12 and 2.87 per cent. respectively, of their total expenditure for the years in question.

Mr. Hamilton

In view of the fact that these percentages are very small, expressed as a fraction of the total amount expended on education, will the hon. and gallant Gentleman give an undertaking that the circular that is to be issued shortly will not be so stupid as to suggest to the local authorities that they should make a 5 per cent. cut overall by concentrating on administration?

Mr. Hoy

On a point of order. In view of the very unsatisfactory nature of all the replies dealing with Scottish education today I give notice that I shall raise the matter as soon as possible.
