§ 4. Mr. Langford-Holtasked the First Lord of the Admiralty what consideration has been given to the proposal to change the name of Naval Aviation to the Fleet Air Arm.
§ Mr. J. P. L. ThomasUse of the term "Fleet Air Arm" was discontinued because it was felt that it suggested something separate from the Royal Navy. Consideration will, of course, be given to any proposals to revise the present title of "Naval Aviation."
§ Mr. Langford-HoltWould the First Lord be assured that the fact that the name "Fleet Air Arm" conveys something separate from the Navy occurs only to those inside the Admiralty and is certainly not the view of those who serve in the Fleet Air Arm? Would he seriously consider whether he should not make this final and last change, in view of the fact that the title of this fine Service has been changed so many times in the last few years?
§ Mr. ThomasI will take note of the hon. Gentleman's assurance. It is the kind of statement which I am perfectly prepared to take into consideration in looking at any proposals to revise the present title of "Naval Aviation."
Dr. BennettIs it not a fact that the Service, whatever it may be known as in official quarters, is still known amongst 1368 those who serve in it as the Fleet Air Arm?
§ Mr. ThomasI was rather inclined to make that sort of statement myself when in opposition.
