HC Deb 15 December 1952 vol 509 c937
2. Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Food how much protein is available in one quart of milk; the number of eggs, and the amount by weight of beef, cod, herring and oysters, respectively, required to afford this amount of protein.

The Minister of Food (Major Lloyd George)

One quart of milk contains slightly less than 40 grams of protein; equivalent quantities are found in 6 eggs and, if the weights of bone, skin and shell are excluded, in 8 to 9 oz. of beef, cod or herring and in about 13 oz. of oysters.

Dr. Stross

In view of the obvious value of milk, particularly in its equivalent to eggs, will the Minister assure us that he will see that milk is made available in as great a quantity as possible for liquid consumption and that the price is kept as low as possible? Further, can the Minister give the cost of the items I have mentioned in terms of milk and, perhaps, of oysters?

Major Lloyd George

I can give the approximate costs for meat, 1s. 7d.; cod, about 10d. or 11¼d; and herring, 8¼d.; I am sorry that I cannot give the price for oysters, but milk costs 1s. ld.

Captain Duncan

Can my right hon..and gallant Friend assure the House that we are not expected to live on proteins alone?
