HC Deb 15 December 1952 vol 509 cc962-3
47. Mr. Snow

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is satisfied with the new layout of the intersection of A 38 and A 51 in the City of Lichfield, which has been completed following a conference attended by the divisional road engineer on 18th July, 1952, which met to consider safety factors.

Mr. Braithwaite

The altered layout at this intersection has been carried out in temporary materials and is still under trial.

Mr. Snow

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that at a meeting at which the divisional road engineer was present one proposition which was put forward and, as I understood, accepted, was the provision of push button control to afford pedestrians that degree of extra safety? Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this is most important because of the near vicinity of a very large school for girls?

Mr. Braithwaite

If the hon. Gentleman is referring to the meeting of 18th July, I understand that it was then agreed that the scheme should be tried and the work done with temporary materials. At the October meeting of the council it was agreed that the layout should be tried until the end of this year. It is to be considered further at a meeting of the council to be held in January. Some fear was expressed that the scheme would cause traffic to pile up in St. John Street but the divisional road engineer tells me that the scheme is working well. I should like to take this opportunity of thanking the hon. Member for taking the chair at the meeting in question.
