HC Deb 15 December 1952 vol 509 c962
43. Sir A. Hudson

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the abolition of the tramways, it is now intended to alter the lay-out of the traffic routes at the Elephant and Castle crossing, in order to improve the flow of traffic there.

Mr. Braithwaite

A scheme for a roundabout has been prepared by the London County Council and is included in the first five-year period of their Development Plan; but, in view of its high cost my right hon. Friend is not able to authorise it in present economic circumstances. In the meantime, with the stopping of the trams, some adjustment has been made in the working of traffic to improve the flow.

Mr. Nicholson

Can my hon. Friend say what would be the cost of the roundabout?

Mr. Braithwaite

About £1,600,000.
