HC Deb 27 November 1951 vol 494 cc1119-20
Mr. S. S. Awbery

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any statement to make regarding the disastrous explosion which took place in Bristol on Saturday last involving the death of 10 persons; what was the cause; if an inquiry will be held; and if he will give some recognition to the heroism displayed by several who assisted in the rescue work.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. David Llewellyn)

I am sure that the House will join with me in expressing sympathy with the relatives bereaved as a result of this accident, the causes of which are already being investigated by His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Explosives. Inquiries held under Section 14 of the Petroleum Act, 1928, are not normally held in public. I can assure the House that due consideration will be given to all acts of gallantry.

Mr. Awbery

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that, in view of the heavy casualties incurred in this disaster, a public inquiry is very desirable? Will he express the thanks of the House to those modest heroes and heroines who worked so magnificently and at very great risk to themselves to release and relieve the injured, including firemen, doctors, nurses, first-aid personnel and civilians? At the same time, will he also express the sympathy of hon. Members to the bereaved?

Mr. Llewellyn

I think that the appropriate form of inquiry has been decided upon and I do fully endorse what the hon. Member has said about the great heroism which has been displayed by all those involved in this tragedy.
