HC Deb 27 November 1951 vol 494 c1119
64. Mr. George Jeger

asked the President of the Board of Trade to what exent the proposed cuts in imports will affect the Humber ports; and, in particular the port of Goole.

The Secretary for Overseas Trade (Mr. Henry Hopkinson)

I regret that it is not possible to say what effect the recently announced restrictions on imports will have upon the trade of particular ports.

Mr. Jeger

Is it not possible for the Minister to ascertain, from the cuts which have already been announced, which commodities are to be reduced and the ports through which they would have been required to pass? In this way, it should be a simple matter to provide the information for which I have asked.

Mr. Hopkinson

I am sorry that the port statistics are not available in sufficient detail to enable a reliable estimate to be made, and will not be available for some time. Such statistics are available only for 1948. Consequently, I regret that I cannot help the hon. Member.
