HC Deb 26 November 1951 vol 494 cc861-2
33. Mr. Roland Robinson

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what progress has now been made with regard to the payment of compensation to shareholders in coal-mining companies following nationalisation; and when it is anticipated that such payments will be completed.

Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

Up to the present, capital compensation has been met in cash or Treasury Stock, to a total of £126,407,371. It is not possible to estimate with any exactitude when valuations will be completed and final payments made.

Mr. Robinson

Can my right hon. Friend do anything to speed up the payment of this compensation?

Mr. Lloyd

It is a most complicated matter; indeed, in certain instances guidance has to be sought from the courts.
