HC Deb 14 November 1951 vol 493 cc963-4
33. Mr. Black

asked the Assistant Postmaster-General the number of persons awaiting connection to the telephone service in the boroughs of Wimbledon and Malden and Coombe, respectively.

Mr. Gammans

One thousand, four hundred and ninety-one and 972.

Mr. Black

Bearing in mind that many of these applicants have been waiting for quite a number of years for a telephone service, can my hon. Friend give any indication as to when he will be able to meet the demands in the area?

Mr. Gammans

No, I am afraid I can give no indication. Additional exchange equipment and underground cables are planned for completion in that area in the next two years but whether or not that will be able to take place I cannot say at this stage.

Mr. R. Jennings

Would my hon. Friend say whether it would be possible to curtail some of the Government Department telephones and give the private subscriber more of a chance?

Mr. Gammans

That does not arise on this Question.
