asked the Assistant Postmaster-General when work will commence on reconditioning the old North Atlantic cable at present not in use.

Mr. Gammans

I understand from Cable and Wireless Limited that the reconditioning of the old Porthcurno-Harbour Grace cable is planned to commence in June, 1952, if sufficient cable is then available.

Mr. Hobson

Will the hon. Gentleman try to expedite this reconditioning because, if not, there will be increasing delay due to the abnormal growth of traffic, both Press and business communications?

Mr. Gammans

The hon. Gentleman of course realises that cable laying cannot in any case be started until the summer. Whether or not cable will be available will depend on the demands on materials.
