HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 cc794-5
10. W. R. A. Hudson

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, for National Service men stationed at long distances from their homes, he will extend to all units the option, already permitted in certain units of His Majesty's Forces, of taking one leave of 72 hours in lieu of two of 36 hours.

Mr. Head

The annual privilege leave for which a National Service man is eligible during his full-time service is 14 days in the first year and 21 days in the second year. This may be taken in one period each year or, if the man so wishes, may be split. This leave may therefore be taken in 72-hour periods. Travelling time may be allowed in addition to these limits if the soldier is stationed a long way from his home.

Short leave granted at the discretion of commanding officers when military duties permit, if it exceeds 48 hours, counts against the soldier's annual privilege leave.
