HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 cc807-8
33. Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government when the promised gypsy survey commenced: and what form the survey is taking.

Mr. H. Macmillan

As a first step, I have asked the Kent County Council to make a survey of this problem in Kent. They have agreed and are now considering the form it should take. A start will be made quickly.

Mr. Dodds

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are gypsies in counties other than Kent and that the application for the survey related to the whole of the country? Does he not think it sheer humbug to talk about the virtues of democracy when so much misery is being caused in this minority problem? Will he go wider than Kent for the survey?

Mr. Macmillan

I recognise the hon. Gentleman's long interest in this matter. It was thought that it would be a good thing to start a kind of pioneer inquiry in one county, rather than to make a wide roving inquiry over the whole country.

Mrs. Jean Mann

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the gypsies' signature tune is: Do not trust him, gentle maiden.

Mr. Dodds

Owing to the unsatisfactory nature of the answer, I give notice that I shall raise the subject at the earliest possible moment on the Adjournment.
